What is an MOT?

A valid MOT test is a legal requirement for all vehicles three years old or more. An MOT test ensures that your car meets environmental standards and road safety. If your vehicle fails its MOT, you will face a fixed penalty if you are found to be driving it once your certificate runs out. At P&J Garage Services, we provide MOT tests for Class 4 and Class 7 vehicles.

MOT Class Explained

The type of vehicle you own will dictate the class that it will be in and one of the most common questions we’re asked is: what’s the difference between a Class 4 and Class 7 MOT? Read on for MOT class explained…

What is a Class 4 MOT?

A Class 4 MOT is the most common type of MOT required on all passenger cars where the gross vehicle weight (GVW) is less than 3,000 kg. A Class 4 MOT is also required for:
  • 3-wheeled vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight).
  • Cars (up to 8 passenger seats).
  • Motor caravans.
  • Quads (max unladen weight 400kg – for goods vehicles and a max net power of 15kb).
  • Dual-purpose vehicles.
  • Private hire and public service vehicles (up to 8 seats).
  • Ambulances and taxis.
  • Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (9-12 passenger seats).
  • Goods vehicles (up to 3,000kg design gross weight).

What is a Class 7 MOT?

A Class 7 MOT is typically carried out on commercial goods vehicles that carry between 3,000 kg and 3,500 kg in weight. The checks carried out during a Class 7 MOT are similar to a Class 4 MOT but are more in-depth. Additional checks carried out during a Class 7 MOT may include tests on whether the tyres are suitable for carrying extra weight, and brake efficiency tests.

What is checked during an MOT?

An MOT technician will undertake a range of comprehensive checks to ensure that your car meets environmental standards and road safety. This includes checks to:

  • Body, vehicle structure and general items.
  • Towbars.

How long does an MOT take?

On average, an MOT test takes between 45 and 60 minutes, however, if your vehicle fails the test and repairs are needed, this could take longer. Furthermore, unless required repairs are made or your existing MOT certificate is still valid, you won’t be allowed to drive your car away.

What are the most common reasons for vehicles failing an MOT?

Some of the most common faults that cause a vehicle to fail its MOT can easily be avoided. Cars typically fail their MOTs due to:

Screen wash is not topped up.

Issues with the registration plate.

Lit-up warning dashboard light.

Stickers obstructing the driver’s view.
We highly recommend checking that the above issues are fixed before your MOT test as they are some of the most simple, yet frequent reasons that vehicles fail their MOTs.
